I&HHM: Who is "DJ Paperz" and what makes him different from other DJ's?
DJ Paperz: DJ Paperz is music loving, crowd rocking, highly requested artist that give his all to the music industry. What separates me from other DJs is the way I look at my brand. I treat myself as an artist. Just like any rapper, singer, poet, etc. I grind inside the club aspect of djing as well as the mixtape and hosting side as well. What you put in is what you get out!
I&HHM: How did you become a DJ?
DJ Paperz: Well, I had a couple family members that were DJ's and I played around with it when I was 16. But when I went away to college in North Carolina, that's when I became hungry and took it to the next level. I started hanging with DJs, helping them set up and they would let me open a party for them. That turned into me getting my own gigs and rocking each and every crowd I played for.
I&HHM: Do you think DJ's still put the hottest artist on, or is it about who is paying the DJ money?
DJ Paperz: Yea I think DJs still play a major role in artist success, whether its playing it in the club, featuring it on a mixtape or just helping that artist push there track! We have the power of making those things happen.
I&HHM: Is the DJ game as competitive as the Rap game with MC's?
DJ Paperz: The DJ is really competitive. You have a lot of good DJ’s out here who are on a constant grind just like the next one. At some times that can make you a better DJ! It's all competition but most of the DJ’s I know or deal with are great DJs and we help each other out. That's what these MC's need to do. Help each other out and support each other.
I&HHM: Are you the best DJ in South Jersey, and why?
DJ Paperz: I wouldn't say im the best DJ in south jersey. I am a very humble person. But i would say i worked hard to create a buz for myself and I do know how to take a party to the next level and some DJs lack that but Djing is a constant learning art. I learn something new every week being around other DJs. I show love to all South Jersey Djs and artist but watch out for me because a takeover is coming soon. LOL
I&HHM: Who are some artist that you have worked with? And some you would like to work with?
DJ Paperz: I've worked with Lyrical Lye, Ock Milly, Jazzy Onez, F Cannon, I Know Brasco, KR, Stocks, Ryan R Star, Jay O..its too many to name..all of these guys have a crazy grind and make good music. I wanna work with everybody who wants to work with me. I never turn anything down. Promo is a great tool in this game and if I can help somebody out by doing a project with them, its also promo for me as well. As far as mainstream artist I would like to work with Meek, Wale, Young Chris, Neef, Travis Porter, Big Sean, Chris Brown..these are just a few that I think I can do some major work with.
I&HHM: Most DJ's look at being a DJ as an Art Form? Do you?
DJ Paperz:Of course! DJing is definitely and Art. Like I said its always something to learn. Different styles, different techniques, etc. You have to practice and when your rocking a crowd, that's your performance!
I&HHM: Who are your DJ influences?
DJ Paperz: My influences are DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Drama, DJ Skillz, Don Cannon, DJ Shizz, DJ Paradime..actually every DJ influences me in some way! S/O to DJ Malc Geez, DJ Greg Nitty, DJ E SUDD, DJ Damage, DJ Qlassick and DJ Omega!
I&HHM: Do you consider South Jersey Hip Hop a movement, and why?
DJ Paperz: Yea man! There’s so many nice Artist out here in South Jersey! The grind, the hustle and the love of music makes it a movement. Consistency is the key to this movement! As long as the artist stay on teh grind and network, South Jersey is going to the next level.
I&HHM: What projects are you working on? And where can the people find you?
